WOMEN HELPING WOMEN 2013

The gift of women, the role of women, has always been the role of community. If you touch a woman, you touch a family, you touch a community, you touch a nation. It is my great hope that as women we will be able to stand our ground in the places we love and say, “This is not acceptable. This is what we will fight for, this is what we will fight against.” Terry Tempest Williams

Nine years ago, when Dr. Maria Boria was made aware of the medical needs of the migrant workers in our community, she immediately offered her services. For Maria, these unmet needs were not acceptable and she enlisted the help of others to establish a free clinic in Marydel, Maryland.

The Women Helping Women Concert is proud to be a vital partner in raising funds for the clinic Dr. Boria founded. It is hard to believe that this will be our 8th annual Women Helping Women Concert!

Last year, the theme of our concert was gratitude. This year we draw our inspiration from the universal element – Water.

“Water influences the emotions, the imagination and creativity – artists, poets and musicians find inspiration in it. Water carries all life. It is beyond time, for water bears in its flow the seeds of future life, as well as the memory of past life. Water mediates between life and death, between being and not being, between health and sickness. Water is the epitome of holism. Every living thing, from the Earth itself to the tiniest single cell organism, needs to both contain and be surrounded by vibrant water. Water is what brings interconnectedness to all of life.” Alick Bartholomew – The Story of Water.

WHW’s exceptional cast of “All Stars” will surprise and delight you with their various interpretations of H2O! The indomitable Sue Matthews, an internationally renowned performer, remains at the helm both backstage as our Executive Producer and on stage as a performer. Lucia Foster, the Producing Artistic Director of the Garfield Center, serves as our Producer and as well as an onstage performer. Pianist Joe Holt, known for his imaginative improvisations and joy of performing, will serve as Musical Director for our cast. The technical mastery of Butch Clark makes the Garfield a magical venue. And, the comic timing and extraordinary wit of our “hostess with the mostest” Jen Friedman, guarantees a rollicking evening for all. Together they will weave a glorious tapestry by drawing on the talents of our stellar cast –listed below

We suggest making your reservations as early as possible, as the event is often SOLD OUT.

NOTES

Dr. Maria Boria has served the medical needs of her fellow human beings for over fifty years. After completing her training in Canada and England, she founded a women’s hospital in India that is now a major medical institution. In the 1970s, she worked at New York Medical College training medical personnel to serve in developing countries and spearheading efforts to create clinics to care for the poor. In 1981, Maria and her husband Jim Berna moved to Chestertown where she began a successful practice in obstetrics/gynecology. Jim died last February, but their two children – Bobby & Gioia, their spouses and five grandchildren keep Jim’s memory bright and Maria very busy.
