Celebrate Maria’s 85th Birthday!

We’ll be celebrating ten years of Women Helping Women and Maria’s 85th birthday. Join us for scrumptious cake from My Best Friend-Yvette Armbruster in the Kohl Lobby at the Garfield during intermission!

Producer: Sue Matthews • Musical director: Joe Holt • Host: Jen Friedman • Percussionist: Bob Ortiz

Dear Friends,

“Women Helping Women” has always been the guiding principle of our activities at the free clinic in Marydel. Over the years, the women we serve requested their wish to have their husbands included. Last Spring, we started our 10th year of service to the clinic. We have changed the hours of activity to be available to working people at a more convenient time thus providing an opportunity for the men to attend. Dealing with the couple has the advantage of better compliance with the health recommendations. Unfortunately the epidemic of diabetes has affected this population too, and educating the patients to a healthier diet has more chance of success when the husband is involved. The same applies to family planning. The only restriction we have for our care is children, as pediatrics is all together another branch of medicine. But everybody else is welcome.

Love, Maria

NOTES

Dr. Maria Boria has served the medical needs of her fellow human beings for over fifty years. After completing her training in Canada and England, she founded a women’s hospital in India that is now a major medical institution. In the 1970s, she worked at New York Medical College training medical personnel to serve in developing countries and spearheading efforts to create clinics to care for the poor. In 1981, Maria and her husband Jim Berna moved to Chestertown where she began a successful practice in obstetrics/gynecology. Jim died last February, but their two children ,Bobby & Gioia, their spouses and five grandchildren keep Jim’s memory bright and Maria very busy.
