OPEN AUDITIONS – The Rocky Horror Show

Saturday, August 8 @ 2PM
Monday, August 10 @ 6:30PM
Wednesday, August 12 @ 6:30PM
AUDITION INFO:
AUDITIONS for the Garfield Center for the Arts production of “THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW” will be held on Saturday, August 8 at 2:00 PM, Monday, August 10 at 6:30 PM, and Wednesday, August 12 at 6:30 PM. Anyone who attends the Saturday, August 8 audition may be asked to return to one of the other audition dates. A familiarity with the show or the movie is strongly recommended. All roles are available for casting.
Auditions will be held at the Garfield Center for the Arts at 210 High Street in Chestertown. If anyone who wishes to audition cannot be in attendance during one of the days and times above, special arrangements will be made. To request special arrangements for an audition, contact the director, Steven Arnold, by email at sarnold@garfieldcenter.org.
Due to the subject matter of the show, the Garfield Center prefers to cast only performers who are 18 or older. However, 16 and 17 year olds may audition, and may be considered in casting, only if they have the permission of their parent or legal guardian to be in the show. An extra form will be provided, and a parent signature required, to demonstrate that permission.
TO AUDITION, you must be prepared to sing a song that demonstrates your singing ability and your range. Singers are strongly discouraged from singing a cappella without accompaniment. A piano is available, but there will be no piano accompanist provided. If an auditioner wishes to sing using piano sheet music, they must bring their own accompanist. For karaoke-style accompaniments, a Bluetooth speaker will be provided for auditioners to hook up their phone or other Bluetooth device to for accompaniment. The GCA does not have a way to play from CD tracks or thumb drive files.
Auditioners may be asked to read from the script. All auditioners will be asked to participate in a dance audition. Auditioners must wear regular shoes. Please do not wear sandals or Crocs.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS WITH VOCAL RANGES:
- Dr. Frank-N-Furter: A charismatic, “sweet transvestite” alien mad scientist. He is theatrical, dominant, and determined to create the perfect man. Range: Baritone.
- Janet Weiss: A naive, squeaky-clean heroine who undergoes a major awakening. Range: Mezzo-Soprano.
- Brad Majors: Janet’s boring, conservative fiancé who also loses his inhibitions in the castle. Range: Tenor/Baritone.
- Riff Raff: The creepy, hunchbacked handyman. He is Frank-N-Furter’s loyal but ultimately rebellious brother from the planet Transylvania. Range: Tenor.
- Magenta: Riff Raff’s sister and a domestic servant. She is seductive and extraterrestrial. Range: Alto/Mezzo-Soprano.
- Columbia: A high-energy, tap-dancing groupie who is deeply devoted to Frank-N-Furter. Range: Mezzo-Soprano.
- Rocky Horror: Frank’s physically perfect, artificially created “muscle man” who is naive and sensitive. Range: Tenor.
- Eddie: A rough, rebellious delivery boy and rocker who was formerly Frank’s lover. Range: Baritone.
- Dr. Everett Scott: A rival, wheelchair-bound scientist investigating Eddie’s disappearance. Range: Baritone.
- The Narrator: Known as The Criminologist in the film, this character stands apart from the action to guide the audience through the story with a dry, comedic tone.
- PHANTOMS: (All vocal ranges) The phantoms are the chorus characters of the show. The Phantoms act as witnesses to the proceedings while also playing a huge role in performing the music, dance, and providing an interesting extra atmosphere to the production. In the stage show, they are not the eccentric characters we see in the movie dancing the Time Warp and in other scenes. Instead, think of them as a Goth Greek chorus, where they sit and stand around watching what’s going on in simultaneous judgment and dispassionate disinterest.
