The Garfield Center for the Arts is pleased to present “Singing Our Stories,” a collaboration by vocalist and songwriter Beth McDonald and jazz pianist Joe Holt on Saturday, March 9th at 8:00 pm. The two will be joined by Mike McShane (drums/percussion) and Jeff Davis (bass) in a concert of both original compositions and classic gems from the ’30s to the ’50s.
McDonald and Holt have performed together at many local venues, including the Prince Theatre in 2006, the main stage of the Avalon Theatre in 2010, and the Stoltz Listening Room this past December. Additionally, they were at the Garfield in February, along with a host of local talent, for the annual, sold-out production of Women Helping Women. Now they are back, this time with Beth sharing a bit more of her singer/songwriter side.
McDonald, who says she is enthralled by the charm and sophistication of another era, has just released a new single, “When the Water Falls,” which she performed for the Women Helping Women concert. She has recorded four CD’s, two of which include Holt on piano. Reviewers have described Beth as having “…a sensuality that sounds modern yet classic…” and “an impeccable voice,” and they also have noted that, “(Beth’s) song writing skills are exceptional.”
Known for his joyful and creative performance style, Holt plays regularly throughout the region both as a solo artist and with a trio. He will include selections from his solo improvisations cd, Stories Without Words, as part of the March 9th show. A recent reviewer noted “The ever tasteful Joe Holt is a soloist extraordinaire, an intense musician with terrific chops, who shows you he means business.”
In “Singing Our Stories,” Beth, Joe and friends weave a unique musical melding of classic and contemporary, joys and sorrows, soul searching and carefree romping for an evening that will touch your heart and soul.
