A New Take on the Classic Musical “My Fair Lady” at the Garfield Center
On April 15th director Tess Hogans and musical director Julie Lawrence will be opening a new show at the Garfield Center for the Arts; Lerner and Loewe’s classic, My Fair Lady. This will be the first musical that the Garfield Center has produced since they collaborated with the Tred Avon Players and the Oxford Community Center on Little Women, the Musical in 2010.
Hogans got the bug to direct the play last spring during a Joe Holt and Beth McDonald concert. “Joe started playing Get Me to the Church on Time and suddenly it struck me that there wasn’t anything stopping us from doing the full show at the Garfield”, she writes. “This is my favorite musical, I watch the Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison version on my birthday every year.”
While she insists that she loves the classic staging of the play, Hogans has taken this production in a new direction, setting it loosely in 2016. Traditionally the play takes place around 1910, but she maintains that the story is the same. “We haven’t changed the script or the songs, mostly just the costumes and some of the sets. I like the idea of taking a classic play and setting it in a new time period to make it more accessible to modern audiences. It proves that the story is still relevant, no matter how long ago it was written.”
The cast consists of actors who frequent the Garfield stage, as well as a surprising number of new faces. “This is what I love about community theatre”, Hogans writes. “Anyone can get involved! I have actors who have never once set foot on a stage, who are doing a fantastic job. I really enjoy getting groups of strangers and old friends together, and then creating something fun for everyone to be a part of.”
The cast includes Katie Cox, Bryan Betley, Liz Janega, James Diggs, Robin Wood, Heidi Butler, Tom Dorman, Rob Note, Chris Williams, Jim Landskroener, Maya Betley, Brad Chaires, MG Brosius, Natalie Lane, Claudia Baxter, Bella Williams, Ashley Lawton, Jennifer Kafka Smith, Jacob Chaires, Cheryl Hoopes and Barbi Bedell.
The show runs for three weekends, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 3pm, April 15-May 1.
